Invitation: Online training for Vector Surveillance

Vector control is the single most effective intervention for achieving a reduction in malaria transmission. Such vector control must be underpinned by a thorough understanding of which vector species are present in a particular area, relative abundance of the various species, breeding site preference, feeding and resting behavior, insecticide susceptibility, data management and interpretation, all of this then integrated into a holistic entomological surveillance programme.  Each of these elements requires specific knowledge and skills, to help programme managers and public health entomologists tailor vector control solutions, reduce human-vector contact, and drive down malaria transmission. APMEN adds value to such capacity gaps which often occur in programmes, to achieve optimized levels of vector surveillance which is the foundation for effective vector control interventions.

    Date: 12-15 August 2024, Monday-Thursday (01:00-03:00 PM Singapore Time)

    Course instructor: Dr Neil Lobo

Research Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Notre Dame, USA

    Learning objectives

    • Use the ESPT to design a question-specific entomological surveillance plan
    • Formulate priority program questions to guide your entomological surveillance planning and activities, as well as help direct implementing surveillance partners
    • Select indicators to address a priority program question
    • Identify gaps in protection by integrating human behavior observations with entomological data
    • Interpret entomological data to support program decision-making
    • Identify key best practices for data entry, cleaning, and management
    • Develop a data collection strategy that allows you to calculate minimum essential indicators
    • Tailor your surveillance plan sub-nationally to adapt to specific contexts
